MLJ Sod Advantage

We have our own sod farm so you would not have to go anywhere else. Having our own sod farm gives us a distinct advantage over other Texas landscaping companies. Having our own sod farm featuring St. Augustine and Bermuda varieties makes it easy for our customers as they are guaranteed to get the highest quality sod. We know the benefits of best practices in sod management and are watchful about conserving the environment as well. While some professional landscapers in Texas may come in and transform your landscape, at ML Johnson, we believe that gardening is not a one-time job. We don’t just change your landscape overnight and leave. We create outdoor experiences that you can enjoy over an entire lifetime!
Sod uses less chemicals and water as compared to seed installations as it is professionally grown, healthy and mature turf that is free of weeds and disease causing agents. Having large grass areas enhances and creates a healthy environment. Sod helps to cool and clean the atmosphere and as a result many people are considering sod for its environmental benefits.
So while you can have someone beautify your outdoors, we will guide you on how to manage it. Using good quality sod is essential but over watering can kill your plants and lawn. Read our Plant and Irrigation Management sections to help avoid this.
Fertilizing Tips
When you have the ML Johnson team come in to manage your landscape, our trained professionals will tell you it is best to fertilize the grass a week after the first cutting. No matter what others may tell you, do not use pre-emergent weed killer for the 1st year after installation of your grass. Bermuda Grass Care
Bermuda grass, one of the best choices for a hot and sunny climate, has a tendency to germinate quickly and produces a fine-textured dense turf. This grass has excellent heat and drought tolerance along with a tendency to go dormant in the winter resulting in less maintenance.
Until germination, the seed beds should be moist and watered everyday or every two days until fully rooted into the ground. Thereafter, only one to two inches of water per week is required. Bermuda should be maintained short and fertilizer should be applied two to three times during the growing season.
St. Augustine Grass Care
St. Augustine grass, the beautiful coarse grass native to the tropics, requires minimal maintenance and is a great cover crop and erosion control tool. This sod is very easy to mow, has attractive color and vigorous year round growth. St. Augustine performs well in wet soils even under salt spray.
Water is only required to supplement rainfall shortages. There is no need to have fixed timer irrigation settings and it would only be a waste. St. Augustine performs best when approximately one inch of water per week is provided.
